Small, White Arrow, Zapotec, Wool Rug, Hand-Woven in Teotilán, Mexico
Our 100% wool, loom woven rugs come from Teotitlán del Valle, a small town an hour outside of Oaxaca.
The cooperative we work with is made up of 22 Master craftswomen weavers. Historically it was always men that would weave, but the cooperative Vida Nueva, launched in 1996 to create sustainable income opportunities for women weavers.
The raw material they use is 100% wool; it is washed, dried, spun and dried again. The preparation of the wool before weaving is a labour intensive process. Then the weaving begins, setting up the loom can take days and is an art in itself. The working of the loom consists of pedals which swap the thread up and down the artisan then passes the mouse which holds the thread in between these threads. This new thread is then pulled hard against the design to form the newest part of the rug.
The women work six to seven hours a day from their homes, each woman has their own loom to weave the carpets and cushions.
