The most northern part of Colombia is Punta Gallinas, consisting of Rancherias and beautiful desert landscapes. Electricity is scarce and internet nonexistent.
At 5am from Cabo De La Vela we travel for two hours by 4x4 vehicle and then take a 15 minute boat ride to a hostel. This takes us to the most northern part of the country, it’s truly stunning but we haven’t found any women artisans.
This is our chance we ask some of the community if there are women here making the bags we are told to wait 30 minutes. The owner of the hostel then takes us 20 minutes into the desert where he drops us off and leaves pointing to the small Wayuu houses.
We walk over and are greeted by Yakalin and her family. She has been making Mochila since she was 15. Her single thread bags take over 1 month to make and are beautiful and intricate.
She walks us through how she knits and the process of making the straps. Her community sells mostly to other local communities where they slowly work there way to the bigger towns.
We try to find any way we can work with her in the future but she has no access to internet or postage for the future orders.
Why a Tmac Mochilita?
Have you heard about our #miprimeramochila campaign?
We launched this campaign to get young girls thinking ethically from an early age about where the things they own come from. #mirprimeramochila or "my first bag" was launched not only want to teach young girls to value all of their possessions but also to start from a young age instilling in young girls the importance of supporting other girls.
This is the perfect gift for any daughter, granddaughter, goddaughter or niece - every bag comes with a matching bracelet. Both bracelet and bag are lasting gifts that will be treasured and passed down through generations.
By buying one of these beautiful bags you are supporting womankind - financially, of course, but also by sharing their story - we have to work together ladies - where better to start than with a beautiful bag? It’s actually kind of obvious.
What’s in the Box?
All of our Wayuu Collection comes hand packaged in a beautiful box, with a description of where your pieces have come from, who made it and a set of cards to share with friends and family so you can show off that you are a conscientious consumer - it’s something to be proud of! In addition to this, each of our Wayuu Collection pieces comes with a completely unique bracelet made up of the same colours as the bag you have chosen. This is exclusive to the TMAC mochilas.
The Wayuu Collection was created by a cooperative of indigenous women living deep in the Guajira desert on the border between Colombia & Venezuela. Every one of these traditional mochilas is completely unique and made in using the traditional Wayuu techniques.
