Product Description:

Perfect for taking to the market, out for the day or storing fruit and veg in the home. Our incredible rope bags are incredibly strong as well as beautiful. Each one telling a wonderful story of the Amazon Jungle in Peru.

The eco-friendly rope bags are the core product of the Maihuna and was first produced to be completely functional. Used to carry everyday items around the community, from tools to fruits and vegetables.

In the modern world where plastic bags are seen too often and you can often return home from the supermarket with more packaging than product, these bags are the perfect way to carry loose fruit and vegetables while also supporting women from indigenous communities in Peru!

The bags are hand weaved by using a small piece of wood as a frame. The string is then woven and knotted one line at a time the different colours added depending on the design.

Depending on size and complexity of the design each bag can take anywhere from one day to one week to produce.

Community Description:

Everything from the Maihuna collection comes directly from the forest, all the materials are foraged for. These age old traditions date back thousands of years and have been passed down from generation to generation.  It all starts with the chambira tree. The leaves are taken from the tree and the fibres are pulled away. These fibres are then taken off one strand at a time and are boiled for five hours and then dried for 24. It is only now that the artisanal process can begin. Gathering the strands together they are rolled together on the thigh at high speed, this knits the strands together forming a very strong rope-like material. It's the elements of the forest that are gathered next, every colour comes directly from the jungle. The reds are from seeds and boiled to remove the colour the string is added and then all the materials are boiled together for three hours. Taking another 24 hours to dry the colour is now bonded with the string and the hand making process can begin.
