Large Cream Pink & White Speckled Hand Woven Basket.
Our Handwoven palm baskets come from a town called Miahuatlan, just over 100km from the city of Oaxaca, Mexico. The making of the baskets dates back generations with the skills being passed down through the family. Traditionally the husbands would go and gather the raw palm from the mountains and return to the community where the women would start the curing and weaving process.
The palm is cut into different lengths ready to be woven. When the design is thought out and the colours are chosen the palms are then individually dyed using only natural colours, all from the local area. The base of all the colours comes from the Nopal Cactus. When complete the women use their nails to strip the lengths into smaller sections.
The smaller baskets can take around a day to weave, while the larger ones can take up to three days. The design is all from memory and the process all by hand.
Originally the baskets were used for functional use in the home, storing everyday items, food, clothing, jewellery, even putting in pieces of wood to make decorative seats. The baskets would also be swapped with different communities for other items food or clothing. It was a lot further down the line they found the monetary value in the items.
